Congratulations to all of our winter sports on your amazing seasons and achievements. March has been filled with professional development, education, and new training equipment. Coach Madison was responsible for coordinating a "Fitness and Wellness Career Trek" for spring undergrad students. Some of the presentation topics included our vision and mission statements, what we do to serve our student athletes, our backgrounds as strength and conditioning coaches, the internship program and what we look for in possible candidates. It was a great opportunity for the students to gain insight into our department.

February has been a productive month for the strength and conditioning interns as they develop their coaching abilities through exercise progressions. We would like to congratulate Caitlin Clark on becoming the NCAA Division I women’s basketball career scoring leader after she scored her 3,528th career point. These new pieces of equipment have added a layer to our individual and team training sessions. Some of the technology includes; DynaMo, NordBord, & ForceDecks by Vald, Keiser Squat, 1080 Quantum, and Smartabase for data visualization. Congratulations to Men’s Track & Field who won the Big Ten Indoor Conference Championship and the Women’s Basketball team who were crowned Regular Season Big Ten Champions. Congratulations to Soccer and Field Hockey on their Fall season. We have enjoyed watching the winter sports begin and are excited to see those student-athletes in action! This month, we began coordinating our full-time staff to volunteer coach ‘check ins’ for the exercise progression portion of the intern curriculum. Coach Evans and Coach Clemens provided educational presentations revolving around their capstone programming project. With finals right around the corner we are looking forward to getting in more continuing education as a staff and some solid training from our student-athlete in the next couple of weeks.

The fall semester has been productive for the Olympic Strength & Conditioning staff. Within the month of October, the staff continued the programming and periodization curriculum for the volunteer coaches. These weekly presentations have been conducted around preparing our volunteer coaches for their capstone programming project. In addition to the volunteer coach’s education, Coach Evans presented to the full time staff on Biomechanics. Finally, Coach Alexander and Coach Clemens were invited to attend a Davenport Quarterback’s Club dinner to represent notable women in the athletic department. The fall has been of to a great start! The staff has been productive training our student-athletes and rooting for the Hawks competing this fall. In addition, the educational curriculum for our volunteer coaches has begun. The volunteer coaches are partaking in a programming and periodization lecture series. We are looking forward to seeing what they create for the capstone program project! The Olympic staff has also partook in educational presentations provided by 1080 and Kieser. Finally, Coach Alexander and Coach Clemens have been leading a monthly DEI Multicultural Affinity Group for female student-athletes titled HERky’s. We are excited to see what is ahead for October - Go Hawks!

The staff has enjoyed welcoming our new Volunteer Coaches for the Summer internships term; Brandon Miller, Jordan Schmitz, Connor Warrick, & Blair Widmer. The month of March has been filled with a ton of competition and monumental seasons. The Olympic Strength and Conditioning staff has bee in full support and spectator mode. It has been great to see our student-athletes competing again while accomplishing their performance goals! Kudos to Adam Kearns, one of our past interns, for landing a full time position with IMG Academy in Florida. We are also proud to announce that our very own, Coach Renteria, passed the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor Certification, was selected to receive the University of Iowa College of Education C. Esco Obermann Memorial Scholarship In Rehabilitation Counseling, and completed her comprehensive exams. Great work Coach Renteria on the second masters & thank you for adding another niche to our multifaceted staff!

Getting back to the weight room and training alongside teammates has provided some sort of normalcy for our Hawkeyes. Fortunately, the Iowa Athletic Department has allowed the return of some of our student-athletes. This has enabled a handful of our Olympic Strength and Conditioning staff to return and train their respective teams. Though, the other half of the staff is patiently waiting to get back, we have remained productive collaboratively. Our staff continues to participate in zoom meetings with sport coaches, sport performance staff, and professionals around the country. Additionally, we have partook in numerous crucial conversations regarding the Black Lives Matter Movement aspiring to educate ourselves. Our staff is committed to creating an environment grounded in justice and equality for our Black student-athletes. We understand this needs to be an ongoing conversation and are committed to standing by and for our student-athletes!

The Olympic Staff’s productivity during the month was filled with numerous staff meetings, webinars, educational forums, and conferences via zoom. As of recently, we have been hard at work planning and discussing our department’s return to campus. This has been through collaborative conversation between our staff, our administration, athletic training, sports medicine, and sport coaches. Ultimately, working to maintain the safest environment for both our student-athletes and staff members. We are eager to return to campus to continue our efforts towards the betterment of our student-athletes! The Olympic strength and Conditioning staff was excited to make more additions in the Isoinertial training department by installing upright pulley flywheel systems. The staff was also involved in the monthly Sport Performance forum, led by Terry Noonan, Director of the Sport Performance Department titled, NCAA: Enhancing a Culture of Safety in College Athletics. Our very own, Coach Renteria spoke at a University of Iowa Sports Medicine clinic for college and high school soccer coaches regarding injury mitigation and load management for soccer players. Additionally, Coach Renteria led a curriculum for the interns regarding programming within the weight room. Our interns began their exercise progressions on both squat and deadlift.

The spring semester has begun and the training is back in action! Coach Maxwell and Coach Dinkelman finished out winter break hosting the West Branch Middle School Kinesiology class’ visit to the Olympic weight room. Additionally, we are excited to have our volunteer coaches for the spring semester; Hunter Barnard, Nathan Ludwig, Cole Moore, Kris Tiedt, Josh Wilken, and the returning Ryan Renken and Thomas Lang. Our interns have started the internship with an exercise progression curriculum led by Coach Walrod. They will be presenting their exercise progressions to the full time staff in the upcoming weeks.

The Assistant Baseball (Pitching) Coach’s presentation was titled, “Using Sport Science as the Foundation for Sport Coaches”. We are excited to see what 2020 brings! The Strength & Conditioning staff had a busy month filled with competition, training, and education. The interns had a curriculum session about Simple-Systems Science. Additionally, a Sport Performance Forum was held. Coach Roberts led the discussion by presenting on Flywheel Training (What it is and where it fits). It was a great opportunity for all sport performance staff members to hear about our new tool in Strength & Conditioning. We have committed to implementing flywheel training at a team level. Congratulations to Volleyball on their competitive season, Cross Country on their individual NCAA Championship appearance, Women’s Soccer on their NCAA Championship appearance, and Field Hockey on their Regular Season Big Ten Champion title; Big Ten Tournament Champion title, and NCAA Elite 8 appearance. Our Sport Psychologist within the Sport Performance Group, Aubrette Kinne, led the October Sports Performance Forum presenting on Mental Health Care Overview & EAP at Iowa. September flew by with the resumption of training, intern progressions, and our fall sports taking off into their season. Good luck to Volleyball, Women’s Soccer, Cross Country, and Field Hockey during their Big Ten competition! Coach Dinkelman is participating in the Executive Leadership Academy within University Iowa Human Resources. The intensive nine-month academy develops and enhances participant core competencies essential for effective, agile, and innovative leadership. Coach Walrod has become an Instructor for the Biomechanics of Sport & Physical Activity course in the undergraduate Health & Human Physiology Program. Coach Roberts continues his education within the Health & Human Physiology undergraduate program taking on a different course for the fall, Metabolic Exercise Testing/Prescription.

The Strength & Conditioning staff kicks off the Fall semester with a productive week of training and development. We are excited to welcome back our student-athletes to another great year of improvement! Coach Walrod and Coach Roberts finished the summer attending the Exxentric High Performance Clinic in Illinois. Coach Evans presented at the clinic as well, his presentation was titled, Using Data to Promote Collaboration & Improved Outcomes. Additionally, we added two new volunteer coaches, Coach Ryan Renken from North Scott, Iowa and Coach Taylor LaJeunesse from Taylorsville, Utah. Coach Thomas Lang from Fort Dodge, Iowa and Coach Tahsin Khataei from Sanandaj, Iran return as volunteer coaches for another semester.
